The global honey industry is estimated at $10 billion, an industry that the Federal Government can harness by empowering traditional bee keepers. It has identified honey not only for its economic potential but also for the benefits it offers to the environment and rural communities. There are moves to encourage new entrants and to support existing farmers to explore both domestic and international opportunities, DANIEL ESSIET reports. Globally, honeybees contribute to food production. They also make an important contribution, through pollination, to crop production and the wider environment. It is for these reasons that the Managing Director, Thy Global Investment Limited, Ismail AbdulAzeez, has been behind the movement to change people’s perspectives about bee-keeping. He has been involved in the campaign to boost bee-keeping and has shown people the importance of honeybees. Bee-keeping and production, if done right, according to AbdulAzeez, could create more income for honey producers and promote international trade. He has been in consultation with stakeholders and includes promoting training and support as a key action to improve bee-keeping skills and provide a supportive and inclusive community. With his support and others’ domestic honey production has risen. Currently, he manages 150 beehives whose colonies produce at least 10 tonnes of honey yearly. He started beekeeping using movable-frame hives, which are placed in various positions in forests or deep vegetation. Wanting to learn more, he participated in various programmes. Today, he has become a successful beekeeper. He serves as an inspiration to others. One of the notable bee farms that conducts training on bee-keeping is in Sango Ota, Ogun State. It is owned and operated by AbdulAzeez. His efforts have started making impact in Ogun as successful bee entrepreneurs are coming from various parts of the state. He has continued to oversee the training of new honey farmers, introducing beehives nationwide. His words: “We have trained close to 200 participants. Our participants are successful because we offered them both theory and practical training. Most of them focus on honey and beeswax sales.” AbdulAzeez brought honey farmers together, organised distribution of resources, infrastructure, and training to reignite the honey industry. His honey bee products have reached wider markets and production rate has risen significantly as curious stakeholders visit his farm to learn his technology and best practices. Today, his business continues to expand and reach new markets. He became a successful entrepreneur by improving the quality of every jar of honey. The road to success wasn’t at all that smooth for him.The business took an unexpected turn with herdsmen and others decimating hives. He said: “We suffered attack from herders two times in 2016 and 2019.” He has suffered slow supply of queens and vanishing honey bees. However, he would not allow the situation to deter him from bee-keeping. Despite the problems besetting the industry, he has persevered and maintained regular training of farmers on proper raising of bees. For him, aside from being a lucrative source of income to farmers, bee-keeping could provide jobs for people who want to have a stable income. He believes promoting bee-keeping in rural areas will help to boost economic development. As his name became known in the sector, he has taken it upon himself to expose more Nigerians to the world of food exports. Read more: thenationonlineng.net/promoting-bee-keeping/amp/

Practical Steps To Successful Beekeeping And Export Of Honey In NigeriaIn this article, we are starting a very interesting and lucrative agricultural business that may seem new to so many people. A lot of people I have met love honey, and they have been wondering how to get into the business of producing honey for both local consumption and export. To be frank, from our childhood experience; especially those of us from the villages, bees do sting terribly when they meet you in the bush. They attack people in colonies when you accidentally bump into them. And now we are telling you that the business of beekeeping can be the game changer in your life. How is this going to be possible? Follow us into the beautiful world of beekeeping. Beekeeping or apiculture is the process of raising and nurturing bees in order to harvest honey or any other products like: propolis, beewax, pollen propolis, and royal jelly from them. From what we have listed, you can see that there are many other by-products we can get from keeping bees apart from honey. We will go through them one by one later to understand what they are and how to harvest them. This business is one of the most promising business ventures anybody can go into and come out highly successful if done properly and marketed well. Where is the best place to site your bee farm?Bees are special type of insects closely related to wasps and ants. They are popular for their role in pollination and, in the case of best known species, the western honey bee; for producing honey. Bees are responsible for producing natural honey that we all love to eat. There are honeys that are not produced by bees. We will get to that later. It is very important to place the hive in a fruit farm as this will boost pollination. Bees are known agents of pollination; this action will multiply your harvest greatly. The honey-bees start making honey which they also eat as their food. They make the honey by visiting flowers in the farm around them. They will collect the sugary juice of the flowers called nectar from the blossom by sucking it out with their tongues. They will then store it in their honey stomach, which is quite different from their food stomach. When they have a full load, they fly back to the hive and offload into their hives. Honey bees collect nectar and convert it to honey, majority of the honey-bee larvae eat honey. According to Wikipedia, a hive is used to describe an artificial/man-made structure to house a honey bee nest. The internal structure of the nest is densely packed with a group of hexagonal prismatic cells made of beeswax Apart from getting honey from your bees, there are other products you can extract from bees which serves as raw materials used by big multi-national companies to manufacture various products. What kind of land do you need for bee keeping in Nigeria?Beekeeping is different from other agricultural undertakings in Nigeria as you do not need to buy or own a piece of land before you can engage in the business. For beekeeping you can lease a piece of land, you can partner with fruit farmers who have citrus and mango trees in their farms. Your bees will help in pollinating their fruit trees; thereby increase the yield of their fruit farms. What quantity of honey can you expect to get from one bee hive? The following is the beehive super dimensions: Shallow : 16” x 19 7/8” X 5 7/8” Medium : 16” x 19 7/8” X 6 5/8” Deep :16” x 19 7/8” X 9 5/8” A beekeeper should expect to harvest between 10 – 15 litres of Honey from a hive. How much do you need to start Bee farming in Nigeria?Do you know that you can start your bee farming business with as low as N100,000? It can equally be as much as N10 million; depending on your financial muscle and experience. To cut down cost, it is recommended that you purchase your working equipment locally. When starting out, go for local beehives as you will spend less and have the local knowledge of the equipment suppliers in case of any issue with them. We have just introduced the concept of beekeeping, you can also see that there is nothing complicated about beekeeping; this is a business you can do without much difficulty. The business is very profitable, the local demand is huge, and the demand from foreign buyers is so huge that it is difficult to satisfy. You are advised to take a move today, follow us as we go in the series. In the next article we will be bringing other important issues in beekeeping which will also include exportation of the product. We also advise that if you are seriously interested in farming bees, you can contact the admin of this forum for practical training.Keep faith with us as we take you on the journey.

Honey is a sweet liquid made by bees using the nectar from flowers. Raw honey is removed from the hive and bottled directly, and as such will contain trace amounts of yeast, wax, and pollen. It is graded by color, with the clear, golden amber honey often fetching a higher retail price than the darker varieties. The flavor of a particular type of honey will vary based on the types of flower from which the nectar was harvested.
Honey has high levels of monosaccharides, fructose, and glucose, and it contains about 70 to 80 percent sugar, which provides its sweetness. Honey also has antiseptic and antibacterial properties. Modern medical science has managed to find uses for honey in chronic wound management and combating infection.
Consuming local raw honey is believed to help with seasonal allergies, due to repeated exposure to the pollen in the area. Pasteurized honey has been heated and processed to remove impurities.
Highlighted below are facts about honey Honey has been used in medicine for over 5,000 years.
Honey is used by several cultures around the world, serving as a base for many traditional medicines.

It is a common, known knowledge that Honey remain a pure, unfiltered and unpasteurized sweetener made by bees from the nectar of flowers. It is collected from wild bee colonies or from domesticated beehives. Bees can be pacified by using smoke from Bee smoker. On average, a hive will produce about 65 pounds (29 kg) of honey per year. The honey is stored in honeycombs. Honey has high levels of monosaccharides, fructose, and glucose, and it contains about 70 to 80 percent sugar, which provides its sweet taste. The flavor of a particular type of honey will vary based on the types of flower from which the nectar was harvested. Honey has antiseptic and antibacterial properties. Modern medical science claimed honey is a sure bet for the cure of chronic wound, and combating infections. Greater percentage of the honey in the marketplace today is processed honey that has been heated and filtered. There are raw and pasteurized forms of honey. Raw honey is removed from the hive and bottled directly, and as such will contain traces amounts of yeast, wax, and pollen. Unlike processed honey that has been heated and processed to remove impurities, raw honey does not get robbed of its incredible nutritional value and health powers. It can help with everything from low energy to sleep problems to seasonal allergies. Globally honey is used for production of different medicine. We have sugarcane honey, hybrid honey and wild honey. Honey is required to be packaged for export in jerry cans to make it easier and safer. It is also advisable that the seller or exporter send samples of the product to be exported to the buyer, so that the buyer can confirm the quality of the product before placement for bulk order. To export honey; The exporter would have to register with Nigerian Export Promotion Council {NEPC}, NAFDAC except if the sales target is the local market, the product shall be registered with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Control, NAFDAC.

Beekeeping is the process of raising bees(Honey-bees) in order to collect honey and any other products made by or gotten from bees, products like; beeswax, pollen, propolis and royal jelly. * Beeswax: to get wax for use in cosmetics, furniture polish, candles and crayons etc * Pollen: used in Cosmetics, used for food, used in the preparation of medicine and hand pollination. * Propolis: used in the repair of honeycombs. * Venom: used in preparing medicine. * Royal Jelly: the Queen bee food etc. The practice of Beekeeping also known as APICULTURE is an agroforestry practice that is recognized and currently practiced worldwide and there is an increasing demand for honey in Nigeria and the world at large. Apiculture is one of the most lucrative enterprises in many parts of the world. It is a profitable business that has no negative impact on the environment. It is a profitable and a viable enterprise that requires very little investment and produces quick returns. Honey-Bees start making honey, which is their food, by visiting flowers and collecting a sugary juice called nectar from the blossom of the flower by sucking it out, Honey bees collect nectar and convert it to honey which they store in their honey stomach. Their Honey stomach is different from their food stomach and when they have a full load, they fly back to the hives to empty it out. Bee farming is one of those agroventures that can be started with less capital or more capital depending on your budget or preference and interestingly, Bees do not require regular, routine daily care, in simpler terms, you do not necessarily need to look after the bees as people would think because all they need is a place they can get nectar, pollen, water and a hive to live in as they pollinate farm crops such as Mango, cashew, pawpaw, coconut, oil palm, citrus, sunflowers etc, on their own and you would not need labour continually until harvest and processing period. You do not need to own a land just for Beekeeping as you can farm them on wastelands, farmlands; If you are already a farmer, and you are interested in keeping bees, it’s even more preferable that you site your Apiary(Bee Farm) in the midst of fruit trees such as mango, citrus, etc, or you can even partner with a farmer on their farmland because placing starting a bee farm in a fruit farm will boost pollination; thereby, multiplying the harvest of the fruit farm, this is the reason bees are popularly referred to as agents of pollination since they scavenge on nectar and pollen, and some of the crops the bees pollinate also provide nectar for them, therefore, you wouldn't need to feed them. Beekeeping is highly profit driven as you can make so much money on just the local markets alone even if you're not an exporter...But most importantly, it is very very important that you consult with a certified Beekeeper because even though some online guides and YouTube videos might give you a head start, nothing beats a hands-on training you will get at a reputable bee farm. you need to get first hand knowledge and who better to help than one who knows and understands the science and art of Beekeeping. Consult an Apiarist so you will get the required training from these experts to begin your Bee farm. You can contact us at THE THY CONSULTING Ltd to help you get started on anything Beekeeping, Grasscutter farming, Snail farming.

Can a bee sting help arthritis? If you have arthritis, you may be using standard treatments to ease joint pain and stiffness. For example, you may be taking over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription medications. Your doctor may have also recommended lifestyle changes, physical therapy, or surgery. Some research suggests that a surprising alternative treatment may also help treat arthritis: bee venom therapy. Read more to find out how bee venom therapy might provide relief. What is bee venom therapy?Bee venom has been used for centuries to treat a variety of conditions. For example, it’s been used and researched extensively in Korea. Nowadays, it’s often delivered through “herbal acupuncture.” First, the bee venom is extracted and diluted. Then it’s administered to specific locations on your body. In addition to arthritis, bee venom acupuncture is sometimes used to treat pain syndrome, progressive muscle atrophy, and some other conditions. What does the research say?Several researchers have studied the use of bee venom for treating arthritis. For example, a study reported in the Journal of EthnopharmacologyTrusted Source found that bee venom can help prevent one type of arthritis in rabbits. A recent review published in BMJ Open also found some evidence that bee venom may help treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis in people. Animal studiesIn a study reported in the Journal of EthnopharmacologyTrusted Source, researchers found that injections of bee venom can help prevent the development of arthritis in rabbits. Bee venom seemed to prevent arthritis with the help of hormones called glucocorticoids. These hormones help regulate inflammation. The use of bee venom, with the help of glucocorticoids, might slow the progression of inflammatory arthritis. These findings build on previous studies on rats. The authors suggest that bee venom may be more useful for stopping the development of arthritis instead of treating established arthritis. Human studiesIn a review article published in BMJ Open, researchers found only one randomized control trial that has tested the effects of bee venom acupuncture on rheumatoid arthritis. In that study, people who used bee venom reported fewer swollen joints, tender joints, and less morning stiffness than those who were given a placebo. The authors of the review concluded that more research should be done to look into the use of bee venom to treat different types of arthritis. More research is neededDespite some promising results, more research is needed to test the potential benefits of bee venom for preventing or treating arthritis. More studies are also needed to determine the best way to administer bee venom, as well as determine the risk for potential side effects. Talk to your doctorNow that you know more about the potential benefits of bee venom, you may be tempted to add it to your arthritis treatment plan. But it’s important to talk to your doctor first. Ask them about any other complementary or alternative therapies that might be appropriate for you. Your doctor can help you understand the potential benefits and risks of bee venom acupuncture and other treatments. In some people, bee venom can trigger potentially life-threatening allergic reactions, so it’s important to be aware of all of the risks and benefits. Personal story“With regard to the benefits of bee venom for arthritis, I think I could be living proof of its validity. Whilst enjoying a day out at Leeds Castle in Kent I was stung on the hand by a bee, which very quickly left me with a hand like a red balloon. The swelling travelled up my arm the following day, resulting in a visit to the doctor who prescribed a heavy dose of antihistamine. However, something bordering on a minor miracle has happened. My arthritic knees, right heel and foot (extremely painful), and the general aches and pains of being an otherwise fit 69-year-old (going on 20 in the head) have not just abated, but almost disappeared. I’d heard of bee stings being beneficial to joints but put it down to another old wives’ tale, yet, unless some weird coincidence has occurred, my poor bee has sacrificed his or her life in order that I may ‘live again.’ Whilst I don’t recommend that readers go deliberately annoying bees to rid themselves of their joint pain … it’s certainly given me a serious buzz. I haven’t felt so good for years.” -Robert Cox Source: www.healthline.com/health/bee-venom-arthritis#personal-story

Nigeria spends over $2bn annually on the importation of honey, the Federal Government has said. According to a report put together by officials of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Nigerian Export Promotion Council and apiculture (beekeeping) experts, Nigeria consumes about 400,000 tonnes of honey annually but produces less than 10 per cent of its total consumption. The report, which is contained in the concept note for the ApiExpo Africa 2018 coming up in Abuja this month, was made available to our correspondent in Abuja on Sunday. It stated that as the Nigerian population grew, heavier demand on food resource had compelled agricultural methods to improve technologically in order to meet the national consumption requirements. It said beekeeping was not an exception, adding that there was the compelling need for beekeepers to imbibe global standards in order to grow the subsector and integrate the benefits into mainstream agricultural development. It said, “Currently, Nigeria consumes about 400,000 tonnes of honey annually, produces less than 40,000 tonnes (10 per cent of the consumption) which by implication translates to an import bill of over $2bn annually. “Low yields from local farmers due to primitive methods of farming means that national food production is less than national food consumption, which by implication swells the national import bill by staggering figures to billions of dollars.” The government, however, stated that it had commenced moves aimed at reducing the amount spent on the importation of honey into Nigeria. It said the implementation of the Apiculture Road map, under the Agricultural Promotion Policy, aimed at transforming the country to one of the top players in the global apiculture sphere. “To this end, government has established the Nigerian Apiculture Platform with the objective of fostering the development of the sector while supporting the beekeepers and processors with the necessary inputs, required policies and legislation to drive the developmental processes for the industry,” the report stated. The Team Lead, ApiExpo Africa, Chinyere Akujobi, stated that the objective of the forthcoming expo was to clearly articulate the importance of the event to national economic growth and provide justification for a comprehensive support by the Federal Government for agriculture-related activity. A Director and Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Dooshima Kwange, has said that beekeeping is a highly lucrative agribusiness in Nigeria.
Kwange who said this recently in Abuja noted that investing in the bee industry would help earn Nigeria huge assets than crude oil.
According to her, “The market worldwide is huge, almost 2 billion dollars annually and we are really not tapping into it because we have not paid attention to this industry.
She hinted that there would be an International Conference Centre, Abuja with the theme, “Beekeeping Industry for Sustainable Development, Wealth Creation and Economic Diversification” by September 20th, 2018.
According to her, the Expo is an intercultural and intercontinental honey show run by an NGO based in Kampala, Uganda, usually held in conjunction with countries to advance the beekeeping industry by promoting the ministry of agriculture and other shareholders.
The director added that the government was also trying to break into other sectors of the economy, majorly in agriculture, and divert from oil saying, the beauty of the industry is that it is not as extravagant as other ventures.
Kwange who stated that the ministry was open to collaboration with foreign partners pleaded with Nigerians to embrace beekeeping for its economic and diverse benefits.
Celebrating the world honey bee day...
A saying goes: “As busy as a Bee”. Have you ever wondered why the “Bee” is termed “busy”?
A hive of bees will fly 90,000 miles, the equivalent of three orbits around the earth to collect 1 kg of honey.
A honey bee visits 50 to 100 flowers during a collection trip.
The Queen Bee can live up to 5 years and its role is to fill the hive with eggs. She is the busiest in the summer months when the hive needs to be at its maximum strength, she lays up to 2500 eggs per day.
According to researchers, the Bee’s brain is oval in shape and only about the size of a sesame seed, yet it has remarkable capacity to learn and remember things and is able to make complex calculations on distance travelled and foraging efficiency.
Additional fact: Only worker bees sting (if they feel threatened) and they die once they sting.
The average worker Bee produces about 1/12th teaspoon of honey in her lifetime and they live only six weeks.
These wonderful creatures are celebrated every third Saturday in August. Today we celebrate the busiest creatures on earth. It’s WORLD HONEY BEE day!
